Held Action Theatre

heldAT_graphicYesterday, I launched a new thing: Held Action Theatre. Specifically, it’s an actual play podcast, where me and my role-playing friends record ourselves playing RPGs. It’s a growing genre in game-related media, from let’s play captures of video game play throughs, to cameras hovering over Magic and Netrunner matches to audio recorders at role-playing tables — my personal favorite is the ongoing lunacy of the crew over at Role Playing Public Radio.

The plan is to post recordings of one-shots periodically, usually broken into parts for ease of listening. We started with the World’s Worst Dungeon Crawl, a parody scenario written by “adventure coach” Bill Cavalier. Six hapless schmoes are pressed into rescuing Princess Bumblebottom of the halfling kingdom Turnipton. That sets the tone for the evening, I promise.

In addition to being able to donate online, Team Platinum Squad will be hosting an Open Game Day in Milton, VT where, for 14 hours, anyone is welcome to come and play some tabletop games with us: board games, card games, miniatures games and RPGs are all welcome! Along with our team playing some of our favorite games, other members of the local gaming community will be bringing out theirs as well. [ . . . ]

The Open Game Day is free and open to all! We only ask for a small $1 donation at the door which will directly go towards our efforts to reach our Extra Life team goal, though attendees are always welcome to donate more if they wish. We’ll also be holding a charity raffle during the event, loaded with gaming related prizes, donated by our sponsors and local area businesses! More information will be added in the upcoming weeks, so check back often for updates!

The day is sponsored in part by Brap’s Magic, the new game store in Burlington. If you want to donate to the Platinum Squad’s fund-raising efforts, check out their Extra Life page for more information, plus the chance to join in.

There’s No Summarizing the Latest Installment of DCM Enterprises’ Lunacies

Der Chelonian in space. Are the continuing adventures of the employees of DCM Enterprises actually transmissions from the universe where Hunter S. Thompson was an avid role-player? This latest installment offers some pretty compelling evidence:

It was then that the charge was blown, and the battle was joined. Behind a rolling, flaming child rode a half-android monk riding a shark who decided to even things up a bit by casting a three-foot-high fog into the crag. The smell of burning hair extensions was only drowned out by the high-pitched screams of strippers who could not see the shark that was tearing through them to impale it with their stripper-pole spears.

DCM Enterprises Episode 84: A Chateau In Darkness…

Der Chelonian in space. The Return of DCM Enterprises gets a little frisky in episode 84, “A Chateau in Darkness…”:

Takemiya, being a monk, had avoided the undisciplined distractions of female attention for well over six decades. But even his untrained carnal senses were telling him that Grandma was all over his shit and if he wasn’t careful, they’d be making the Heavenly Banging Cannons before too long. He was already suspicious of the tea, and as his eyes scanned the room for a neglected houseplant in which to dispose of the liquid, he noticed more than a few things. Firstly, there was no bed. Secondly, there was a wheelchair in the corner that looked as old as Grandma herself. Thirdly, there was a rocking chair in the middle of the room. Not only was that a weird place for a rocking chair, but there was a small spot of dried blood on the arm…

New England Role Players Association Makes a Break for It

One Shots cover. Published at Atlas Games.

Jailbreak is a legendary scenario in some role-playing circles, particularly those that treasure its parent game, Unknown Armies. It has built-in friction among the player characters, as some play the inhabitants of a lonely farmhouse and others the convicts that invade it. It has high weirdness. It has ample potential for mayhem.

So of course, it’s a natural fit for the New England Role Players Association. Jailbreak is the podcast’s final post before their summer hiatus. You’ve heard of summertime reading. Well, here’s some summertime listening. Sweet dreams, everyone.

New England Role Players Association Demonstrate the Democracy of Death

Things get grim in this installment of Halfway to Han, the New England Role Players Association’s Star Wars actual play series:

When Twi’Lek Noble Pratari Tara’Cahma is hired by the Sith and Republic to oversee negotiation talks pertaining to the peaceful transition of power on Coruscant…almost everyone dies. Some justly, some unjust. Death is the only truly democratic institution in the universe.

Green Mountain Gamers Light the Jet on June 15th

The Green Mountain Gamers’ Summer Game ‘n Grill is set for June 15th in Newport, not at all far from the shores of Lake Memphremagog. Green Mountain Gamer events are day-long free-for-alls where players bring their favorite games to share and enjoy. If you’re an old hand, you know what to do. If you’re new, you can browse the offerings until you find something that appeals or ask to join a game on the cusp of commencing. Most players are happy to bring in someone new.

Manning the grill and concessions this year are students from North Country Union High School, raising funds for their exchange trip to Germany. Highlights include “knockwurst, bratwurst (with sauerkraut!), German potato salad, and baked goods.”
